About Aesthete Press

Aesthete Press is a boutique literary press devoted to the cultivation of aesthetic beauty in literature. The books and novels we publish have poignant and poetic language, they are of cultural and artistic importance, and their authors are devoted artists who live for their work, ensuring a congruence between the writer and what is written; something which renders literature a poetic and aesthetic quality, at harmony in the world.

Aesthete Press was first begun in 1998 by Gustav von Stroheim, an Austrian who grew up on a large estate outside of Vienna. His father, who was a Brigadier General in WWII, wanted the young Gustav to likewise become an army officer: an occupation he considered fitting for an aristocrat. Gustav, however, showed an inclination to art at an early age. He began a modest art collection while still a teenager, and had a library filled with French- and English-language books. He loved reading in French and English, and despised reading in German—something which made his school instructors furious.

The beginnings of Aesthete Press showed little hope. Although Gustav was ambitious and energetic, a literary press whose works were primarily in English, with some titles in French, found very few readers in Vienna at the time. And even the expatriates and multi-lingual Viennese readers couldn't keep up with the highly-literate, intensely aesthetic structures of his publications: his love of Classicism, his preference for books who paid homage to Homeric heroes, Russian folklore, or Oriental decadence. In 2000, Gustav closed his Vienna printing-press and moved to Paris.

The next ten years were spent between Paris, Ibiza, and Monte Carlo, where Gustav devoted himself to the playboy lifestyle: sailing his boat on the Mediterranean, parties with endless amounts of champagne and glamorous European women. He looks back on these years, he says, and smiles with pleasure; but he feels some shame at having wasted this time of his life on everything frivolous and nothing literary.

In 2010, Gustav moved to Hollywood, Florida (a city north of Miami), and almost immediately resumed his dream by relaunching his publishing house, Aesthete Press. Gustave remains the owner and CEO to this day, but the company's day-to-day activities are handled by his president: Monique Fields, and her second-in-command: Katherine . Literary-fiction novels, literary criticism, poetics and cultural studies, and travel writing. Aesthete Press has recently partnered with the literary social network, CulturalBook.com.
